St. Michael’s Church, Basingstoke
The project at the Grade I listed St. Michael’s Church in Basingstoke involved a comprehensive reordering of the historic interior to support contemporary worship and significantly expanded community use. Working in close collaboration with the church and in consultation with the Winchester DAC, Historic England, and the Amenity Societies, the team undertook a detailed analysis of the historic fabric and furnishings. This process identified opportunities for meaningful change and substantial improvement, while revealing and enhancing the presentation of the church’s magnificent medieval interior.
The scheme introduced much-needed kitchen, servery, and WC facilities beneath the existing galleries, alongside improved welcome and meeting spaces. Historic pews were sensitively adapted for flexibility, and the existing chancel was extended into the nave to create a generous new platform—establishing a clear focal point for contemporary worship and events.
Extensive new lighting and audiovisual systems were installed, and the entire ground floor was made step-free. This project marks the first phase of a wider masterplan to strengthen the civic role of the church and churchyard within Basingstoke town centre.
